Therein may lie the problem. I never saw any of the European versions and wouldn't understand them if I did. However, I can understand the music and it was absolutely glorious. OK, maybe not the best singers (Crawford or Auberjonois) but the actors portrayng Alfred and Sarah were excellent.
As for the story, heck, anything would be an improvement over the original movie. I bought it last year to remind myself again how bad it was.
I suppose, to be fair to the European versions, I should see an adaptation exactly like them but in English. I'm not flying 3,000 miles to watch a show I can't decipher. So, if there is ever a London edition, perhaps I'll spring for a passport. But until then, I just can not despise a show I thoroughly enjoyed.
I hope this opinion doesn't get me banned from the list. :>)
