Oooh, I adore the concept. That's the kin d of thing that's always a source of interest to me.

Having said that I find that particular piece a little disappointing. It's a little TOO deriviative of the original perhaps. It's a touch too fractured in the middle and the composition loses something for it. And the colours don't sit well with me??

There's a book called I Am 8-Bit which collects together a project of visual responses to 1980s arcade gaming. There are some brilliant pieces in there that really stretch the concept but still make perfect sense... I like this kind of visual re-evaluation thing.
