I was not a fan of "Hang Cool" although there were a couple of decent songs. The new album blows HCTB away. The vocals and production are much more raw and sound almost live. There are some good song choices. It is not trying to copy Jim at all. "All of Me" makes a simple case for what the album is about. Meat is not playing "Patrick" with obscure references to a short story and it really helps.
The shame is he ruptured a vocal chord and that combined with weather issues caused the whole AFL fiasco and got the Aussie press on him with a vengeance and as a result it seems few in the press wanted to review the actual album or fear of appearing "uncool" while everyone else was blasting a 12 minute medley done in a damp, cold, echoing stadium to a pre-recorded band track then it turns out he had a damaged vocal chord. Check out some of the vocals on the US or UK legs of the "Hang Cool" tour and you will see how unfortunate it was that he released "Handbasket" just before the AFL thing. The album needs a fair assessment which is not forthcoming from the Aussie media.
