Maybe this is just what happens, though.

Kind of like - my family follow the game of professional darts. Back in the day, it used to be all... the audience need to be quiet and drink their beer quietly and smoke like crazy as they watch the game. Not as quiet as the snooker, but kind of quiet.

Then someone thought it would be a good idea to run a professional darts league like they do pro-wrestling. So they gave the players funny nicknames, let the audience sing and chant, and hold up signs with jokes on, and wear fancy dress outfits...

And lots of the original audience of darts fans hate it. They hate the chanting, they hate the singing, they hate the costumes and the silly names. And they hate the "no smoking" rules!

But it proved really popular and the new audience is *so much* bigger now. The crowds are enormous, their age is younger, the prize money is enormous, so the players can go full-time and train more and that's raised the standard of playing a lot.... and, well, it's transformed it. The quality of darts in terms of playing at the top of the game is so high now, and that's a big draw for another group.

So... maybe this is the kind of thing that is happening. Maybe it really isn't like theatre that you know, and maybe it's really something you don't like, but maybe it'll bring in a new kind of audience and work out well in the end.
