Don't forget that although that assassination attempt failed, in 1963 and Saddam fled to Egypt, a CIA-organized coup did successfully assassinate Qasim and Saddam's Ba'ath Party came to power, allowing Saddam back in the country and taking up a position as head of Iraq's secret service.
