I think that everybody interprets the songs in their own way, and, maybe sub-conciously, try to project them onto situations in their lives.
For example: Not a dry eye (not Steinman, I know, before anybody starts yelling) is a song about a lost love, but also a song about a theater or movie set, and it might match the situation of everybody's lost loves, even if most of the lines are not matching, BUT they interpret the meanings so long, till they are matching for themselves into the lines.
