Stop writing songs like you are the centre of the universe and everyone really really wants to know about your mundane everyday bathroom rituals. Stop writing songs that only you will ever understand. Try and reach the hearts of others rather than asking others to reach in to yours. > Do you think this comment was a protest/complaint against > some style of song that has been popular? If so what type > of song? Which writers or songs might be representative? I don't know, but a lot of this emo crap that's around at the moment I personally just can't stand. I feel *trapped* just listening to it. Trapped in the *smallness* of the world of the whiny singer. It makes me angry that a person can be so insular and wrapped in self-hatred and wants me to love them for it. If they hate themselves so much, why don't they find an interesting thing to sing about that's not themselves? Grr. I also want to make a t-shirt that says "I found depression before it got commercial". But anti-emo-kid as that may be, that's not strictly related. > What might be examples of songs by Jim Steinman that do a > good job of “not looking inward”? Most of them. > What might be examples of songs by Jim Steinman that do > not do a good job of “not looking inward”? The Future Ain't What It Used To Be. Probably... stuff like that... > What might be examples of songs not written by Jim that do > a good job of “not looking inward” and that Jim would > presumably like for that reason? Most songs from opera, musicals, TV, film, that are related to the subject matter and are not just random songs. Probably not restricted to 1st person character songs as you think, but I don't really know for sure. > I have exams to take all this week up until the end of > Saturday the 16th. Though... you structured your post like an exam paper. That's an example of a person's writing falling into the restrictions of their real life. Angie | |
