i'm sure i promised a review/description of the Loaf concert i went to (it was on a Wednesday at Wembley Arena), but i had exams and then got really drunk for a coupla weeks. just sobering up long enough to write this and read up on different routes of synthesis for amphetamines. due to the delay, this won't be anywhere near as detailed as i'd hoped - but i will waffle randomly so as to delay reading up on amphetamines and because, well that's how i roll... as i had an exam the next morning i couldn't play loud Jim songs on my way to the gig to pysche myself up, instead had to listten to myself waffle on about different types of shotguns and the stories that tyre marks tell, so didn't get off to the best of starts. ah well. sidepoints: the first two gigs i ever went to were Meat gigs (94 and 95 i think) and i'd gone with my dad and my sister (as on this night), so this was kinda like a nostalgia trip, particularly as i wasn't too interested by the TMIL songs. also for me, Meat's gigs (kinda like Bon Jovi) have always signified a coming together of all types of people, from pensioners to wee babes (i even saw Asian folk there, Christ! i thought we were the only ones - my sister shouting "Indian!" at everyone we saw, it's ok, she can do that, being of a subcontinental origin herself). always like the idea of new generations of Steinfans developing, like the little kid i met at Warwick a coupla years back. Unfortunately, both the guy sitting next to me (who funnily enough also had an exam the next day) and myself managed to upset this kid in front of us who dared to say that Trivium and Linkin Park were better than Iron Maiden. felt kinda guilty, but he did ask for it (his dad appeared to agree with us). wore my newly created "Jim Steinman - Bad For Good" shirt, although no one seemed to have a clue... ah well... enough babbling, on with the show: Meat started off with Paradise (after the ladies whipped up a short and sweet reading of All Revved Up) and while expecting the worst, i was pleasantly surprised. his vocals seemed really strong and unless i'm mistaken weren't pre-recorded. unfortunately, this was as good as Meat was the entire night (but other than one song it was never bad). while the song itself was strong, the ever-present theatrics seemed a bit lacklustre compared to previous showings, can't quite put my finger on it... i should also say that while i'm a complete mark for Patti (aren't we all? fie upon nay-sayers!), i was impressed by [damn! can't remember her name, you know who i mean]. not only is she easy on the eye, that's a pretty big voice coming out of such a little lady and she had real stage presence. definitely held her own. Frying Pan and Rock'N'Roll Dreams were heavier than i've ever heard them before. the band sounded awesome as always (i must mention that the saxophonist may be the coolest guy walking the planet today) but Meat seemed like he couldn't keep the pace at times. it's not a major gripe as it was only occasionally. also the shooting flames during "Fire! Fire! Fire!" were cool. you could feel the heat way back. Hot Summer Night/Took The Words: there was a video of Jim and Karla performing Hot Summer Night. never seen it before (am assuming it's old live footage). regardless of all the shit that has happened and reasons for why it may have been shown, i thought it was a nice touch. as with Paradise, theatrics were lacking, there was no hurling of abuse at the audience - what can i say, i like the abuse - and very little in the way of hand claps. again, seemed to be rushing. Anything For Love: please Meat. never sing this song live ever again. ever. it was horrible. i cringed all the way through it. while a lot of other songs were patchy in places this was just wrong. Objects: epic. can't actually remember too much else. enjoyed hearing it live. Alive was played during the intermission. it was the album version but for some reason 90% of people remained standing throughout and clapped and whooped at the end. must've thought it was live. go figure. they did play a motherfuckin' montage of Meat's film career throughout, which was quite cool. If It Ain't Broke: was alright. Meat was better vocally than when he played Only When I Feel a coupla years back. what was impressive was The Storm. fuck me. much better than the shit on TMIL. having never seen Tanz or DOTV live, it was totally exhilarating... definitely a highlight. Pig: for some reason, my sister hates this song. i love it but think that we have yet to hear a definitive version of this. live, it was so much better than on TMIL. cool video playing through out, would be good as a promo. i videoed this song (and bits of others) as i recall someone asking for it. problem is it came out kinda shitty. will try and youtube it if i ever get a moment to breathe. BFG: as with Pig (and all TMIL songs), much better live, but i think Meat's forgotten how to breathe. Blind As A Bat: other than Alive and the covers, seemed to be the only non-Jim song all night. All Coming Back: lots of talking at the beginning and beautiful instrumentals by Randy Flowers (who reminds me of Springsteen for some reason) and the pianist (sorry i'm forgetting names at the moment). Marion Raven came out but forgot to bring a microphone that worked with her. Meat kinda fell apart on this song (he seemed to have more problem with slower songs), but that may have been partly due to the distraction of actual technical difficulties. Bat: no review. too busy singing myself hoarse. Covers: Black Betty, Gimme Shelter and something else. don't think it was Mercury Blues. can't remember what. overall, Meat was much better vocally than at Warwick a couple of years ago and on recent live recordings i've heard (on which note can i just say thanks to everyone who has shared bootlegs and such. greatly appreciated. will download them when i get a chance (assuming they're still up). Probably missed out quite a few songs, but my memory ain't what it used to be (actually that's a lie, it's exactly what it always was... i think...). wanted to hear FCOL but after the AFL debacle probably best he didn't try that one. hang on, i'm pretty sure there was no Heaven Can Wait. WTF?! ASPEN!!! that's her name... knew i'd remember it... | |
