I'm a huge Bacharach/David fan--and have been probably longer than a Steinman fan. There are a few similarities--both took a very pop meets Broadway approach I think. I'm not sure I'd call Bacharach's writing style and producing style "less is more" at ALL though--he was known for meandering melodies that on first listen often don't quite click in your head but later you realize how brilliant they are. His arrangements could often be wonderfully baroque--he learnt from Lieber and Stoller (who's arrnagement of There Goes My Baby was one of the first rock/pop songs to use strings) and loved to mix musical ingredients. And of course Dionne Warwick was to them what Meat is to Steinman (and neither was anywhere as good without their songwriter) E > Y'know for the longest time I just assumed Jim wrote this > one as well.
