| On a sort of Jim related note, on Saturday night I saw Britain's (and therefore the world's) top Meat Loaf tribute show, at the illustrious Carlisle Sands Centre. I'm not a great fan of tribute acts but I actually had a really good time. After all the fun of Tanzing in Berlin and Budapest I was feeling withdrawal from Jim's music and when I heard Steve Steinman (no relation, although he sounds like he could be related to Peter Kay) was doing a show called The Bat Trilogy I figured if I wanted to hear the songs performed live then this was the show to see. I know Meat Loaf is touring later in the year, but for twice the price you'll probably get half the voice (but most likely three times the arse) of Steve and no less enthusiasm. So I went, but very definitely with my Jim fan hat on, and really had fun. The premise was they would perform songs from Bat 1, 2 and TMIL and all the hits were done as well as Carpe Noctem, If it ain't Broke, It's all Coming Back and TMIL (the only non-Jim song). Intriguingly they also did Dead Ringer which he said was such a bloody good song he didn't care that it wasn't on a Bat album he'd do it anyway, and played for 2 1/2 hours in total. Vocally Steve does sound quite like Meat although you can tell the difference, and nowadays he doesn't miss nearly enough notes or get enough words wrong to pass. There also wasn't a bloke on the side of a stage to play a recording of the song to cover missed notes. The band were very professional and I was particularly impressed with the keyboard player who tackled a medley of Original Sin and It's all Coming Back to me Now without simplyfying it at all. I spoke to him afterwards and he said he though he had simplyfied a few bits, but I couldn't tell. The dancers were quite hot (although they were no Aspen and CC) and Steve didn't lech up to them enough to pass as Meat. The dance routines, however, looked very school disco; but I was still fondly remembering the dancing in Tanz which nothing can match up to. Had a nice, albeit brief chat with Steve afterwards, during which I stressed that I was a Jim Steinman, not a Meat Loaf fan. We actually talked about Tanz which he is a big fan of, and he was also a great admirer of Steve Barton too. So if he brings the Bat Trilogy show (or his forthcoming Vampires Rock show) to your neck of the woods (did you spot that bad pun) I can highly recommend it as a fun night out. Peace, Will | |
