Self-indulgent and laborious? We are referring to art, which definition includes such concepts. Although I've accused Jazz to be self-indulgent to the point at times of omitting the audience factor, but that only is when the band really does play for themselves. Then, Jazz is art, and art is self-indulgent. We tend to seek in our music elements which we can relate to, sort of like the Hallmark cards of the recorded kind.
