Jim Cypherd likes to see the reactions on peoples' faces when the first performance they see is fresh in the foreground. He said he feels he could read their reactions and know what they are likely to say before they say it, which they can't accomplish in the impersonal submissions of a tape. In that respect, he was able to get feedback on the entire songs' presentations and not just about where the chorus went as opposed to the length of a verse.

When shopping a demo to get a record deal, there is no guarantee that yours will be heard, and no way of knowing what is thought of it. And I also do believe that the live performances made the difference in its making it.
