I agree entirely about that thing you were saying. About the cognitive dissonance that too much specificity can create.

In those parts of Steinman songs you mentioned, there is abstract/poetic stuff there, but there's still physical stuff being mentioned. Emerald City and Grains of Sand can be pictured, as can Homecoming Queens and Gymnasium Lights. There's still something to picture, even if it's not a literal storyline. A lot of what's in the Regret song can't be pictured easily, such as a heart crying, haunting forever, heartache, emptiness et cetera. It's that sort of abstractness where you can't picture anything that I'm talking about.

I'm aware that Steinman's songs, and many others I like, also have things that can't be pictured, so that's not an Absolute Law of Songwriting either.

With the Regret song, the comments I've posted might not really be the reason I don't like it. It's like, I first hear the lyric and know for sure that I don't like it. Then, afterwards, I come up with a rationalization as to why. The rationalization could be wrong, but the listening impression can't be.

On Fur Sarah, ich begreife nicht Deutsches, so I don't really know. My liking of that song is kinda a music-only deal. It's based originally on what is heard in the film "A Small Circle Of Friends", and listening to a Tanz cast recording without understanding it. I have a demo of Aris Sas singing an English version and I very much like that. So I guess my answer is a yes based on that demo only. I never saw DOTV so I don't know it in context.
