Sure, If you consider the need to sue Todd "I'm God and Can Do Whatever I Want" McFarlane in order to obtain royalties due to him from unauthorized use of his characters/work in continuation of the comic book and in the toy line. Which was all that much funnier when you consider how Todd - one of the founding members of Image Comics - railed against the way that the Big Two treated their creators as little more than slaves - despite the 'work for hire' status of their contracts. So McFarlane, Erik Larsen, Jim Lee, Rob Liefield and a few others break from the 'Big Two' in order to create a comic book company where the creator got rights to what they create. (Kind of like the 'Vertigo' imprint already from DC.) Gaiman fills in on a few issues of Spawn - basically creating a story out of the mess that McFarlane had going on with the concept. McFarlane then takes those characters - which are the property of Gaiman - and uses them in future stories, creates a miniseries and a toyline. When McFarlane refused to compensate Gaiman for the unauthorized use of his creations (which was the whole idea behind Image Comics - which fell apart rather quickly I might add) Gaiman had to sue him to clear up the mess. Which is funny how it came right after the lawsuit filed by a hockey player who took umbrage to McFarlane turning his name into a psychotic murderer. More funny how Todd is the most routinely sued of all the founders of Image Comics - because of his 'I'm God' attitude. So blame Gaiman if you want for the 'falling out' but the responsibility for it falls squarely on McFarlane's rather large ego (cause it can't reach through it to land on his shoulders). Rabe... ...who quite enjoyed the graphic novel, the book and the film "Stardust" immensely... | |
