| I was listening to Bruce Springsteen's "Wings For Wheels" the other night, and to me it's got the lyrical similarities to something Jim may have written, like much of Bruce's early work. The version I've got is from 1975 so maybe even JD can stomach it. >It's an early version of Thunder Road. But it's not the same song. Lately I prefer it over Thunder Road. This is my lyrical translation, should be accurate. The screen door slams, Angelina's dress sways Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays Roy orbison singing for the lonely That's me babe and i want you only Don't turn me home again I can't face myself alone in that mirror again tonight Don't run back inside baby, you know just what i'm here for So you're scared and you're thinking That maybe you ain't that young anymore Show a little faith there's magic in the night You ain't a beauty but baby, ah you're alright And that's alright with me >It seems more about the man and less about the girl. More about a man on the prowl trying to get laid, less about escaping some town with his girl. The softer side of "Stark Raving Love" maybe? It's about the prowler who cannot go home alone. This 4/4 she's gonna overheat Make up your mind girl i gotta get her back out on the street I know you're lonely like me so baby don't try and fake it I'm no prince and i can't lay the stars at your feet But i got this old car and she's pretty tough to beat There's plenty of room in my front seat, baby if you wanna take it >It's about a car? Yeah, right. It's another "boner line" in my book. But it's almost misogynistic, "make up you mind girl, I got to get her back out on the street". It's like saying if you ain't going to go all the way tonight, let me find someone who will. Oh roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair It's like the rushing touch, the dirty wings them highway angels wear Well tonight we're gonna find out how it feels I'm gonna trade in your wings - for wheels Climb in back, heaven's waiting down on the tracks Ah, mama, come take my hand We're gonna ride all the way to the promised land Oh and we’ll dance all the way, dance all the way >The themes of innocence lost, or in the era of losing it. The man who comes along to take away the angels wings and put the girl on the fast track. Of course he's promising the ride that'll take her to "the promise land". Man, it reminds me of Paradise By The Dashboard Light. Now the season's over and i feel it getting cold I wish i could take you to some sandy beach where we'd never grow old Ah but baby you know that's just jive But tonight's bustin' open and i'm alive Baby do what you can to make me feel like a man But this 4/4/2's gonna overheat Make up your mind girl, i gotta get her back out on the street I know you're lonely like me, oh so don't fake it And maybe i can't lay the stars at your feet But i got this old car and she's pretty tough to beat There's plenty of room in my front seat Oh if you think you can make it, climb in This is town full of losers and baby i was born to win >Okay, so maybe this isn't some storybook romance. He could tell her the things she wants to hear, but it's not really worth the effort. It's about having contact just for the night, while reminding the girl that he could be back on the street whenever he wanted to. But, it seems he only still has it in head, ain't the catch he was before. He'll be back with her like he is every night, but still with delusions of grandeur. Parts remind me of the last act of Paradise and Two Out of Three. I've said before and will continue to: Bruce and Jim are two sides of the same coin. To me, Jim represents a fantasy, Bruce a reality. Their music tells stories and takes you places. I'm sure some fans here have already hear the song, but I'll share it anyways. Thoughts? Probably the longest thing I've posted. And the lamest. Except for that Bonnie Tyler Heart Strings thread. And the thing about the Polar Bears.... | |
