Jens Lekman is a brilliant new Swedish singer/songwriter - a few brilliant tracks off his latest album can be downloaded here: http://www.secretlycanadian.com/onesheet.php?cat=SC160 Lekman's also a big fan of Jim Steinman: http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/feature/46011-interview-jens-lekman Pitchfork: If you talk about those, do you get sued, or can you talk about what some of those samples would have been? Jens Lekman: A Jim Steinman song, I think? It's the guy who wrote all the songs for Meat Loaf. Or not all of them, but he was working with Meat Loaf and he wrote all the best power ballads in the 80s, like "Total Eclipse of the Heart"-- and one of my all-time favorite songs, "Tonight Is What It Means to Be Young"? Pitchfork: Oh man, I need to brush up on my power ballads. Jens Lekman: You have to listen to that soundtrack, the Streets of Fire soundtrack. There's that song "Tonight Is What It Means to Be Young", it's just so amazing. It's really long and it goes higher and higher, what's that called? It's just amazing. It just blows you out of your mind, basically. Pitchfork: Which of your songs was the Jim Steinman tune going to go into? Jens Lekman: Well, I shouldn't be talking about that, actually. It's not really interesting anyway. But yeah, I did try to sample some Jim Steinman stuff. It's expensive. | |
