I remember anxiously awaiting 'Emotions'' follow-up forever--way too long between records. I read every interview/review out there, as well as everything Billy and his fanclub put out (I supplied the the 'Knightline' interview that Jim gave on 'Signs' that is posted on the Rockman's archieves)that was written at the time as it happened and I remember Billy explaining in earnest that Mutt had to 'go plant cabbages' long before Jim was on board...mind you, both artists were at the top of their games and didn't need each other's fame desperatly, but I do believe that Mutt was the best choice for Billy at the time--although his giving Wild Bill a pass wasn't shockingly suspect. I always thought it was interesting that Billy didn't pursue Mutt for 'Enough is Enough', 'Signs'' follow up--but by then Billy wasn't the hot commodity he had been just previous, so Mutt's passing then could be reasoned away as well...
Jim is the Ron Popeil (famous TV huckster over here) of the pop world, bless his heart, and he always put the glistening veneer on every aspect of 'Signs'. Now mind you, it's not all Jim's fault. When somebody like Billy who's been hitting them out of the ballpark hands you a burlap bag, you're inclinded to thing it's worth hauling home. But the quality of the compositions was just not up there, read 'departure in direction, 'growth''..yeah, if it works. It didn't for the most part and Jim's approach didn't save the day.
I'm intrigued as to why Billy now is sharing this at such a late date and oh yeah, I DEFINATLY want to hear the rest of the story. I never believed Jim and Billy worked together that seamlessly, especially since that album basically sunk an otherwise promising career and the argument over engineers was pretty well known. It's interesting that Billy recommended Jim to Def Lep when Mutt pulled out on THEM at the last minute, during the 'Signs' recording. They were left waiting long enough to hire Jim--before they parted ways and Mutt returned for them--maybe Joe Elliott was doing Olga, too--or maybe Shania!
God, I love rock n roll!
Cheers!
