I think I get just about the gist of that. I had French classes for three years in high school, but at that time, I just couldn't deal with having classes in four different languages (Dutch, English, French and German).
A couple of years ago, I was in Liège (in the French-speaking part of Belgium), where they either don't speak Dutch or pretend not to speak it to annoy those pesky Hollanders. It took some digging, mais je pense mon Francais n'est pas très terrible pour, ehm, someone, qui n'ai parle Francais pour de douze ans.
Since then became hugely addicted to a Dutch singer who focusses on French chansons. And while I believe whatever she sings, I'd like to know what she sings though.
