Meat Loaf in Helsinki

Yesterday I saw Meat Loaf live for the first time. A good show, a great band, some wonderful songs. But Meat Loaf's singing... He didn't really sing Jim's melodies but composed his own melodies. Needless to say that Jim's melodies are better. In some way it's the same thing as Lou Reed or Bob Dylan mumbling their old songs live so that the melodies become unrecognizable.

At some point I started to think of Meat more as a master of ceremonies than a lead singer. And as a show man he was much better than as a singer. The show lasted for more than two hours. I did enjoy it but not as much as I hoped I would. The hall was half empty. I was standing close to the stage.

The Steinman songs played in the concert:
– If It Ain't Broke Break It (possibly my least favorite Steinman song but a lot of fun anyway.
– Out of the Frying Pan (one of my very favorite songs)
– Bad for Good
– Life Is a Lemon
– Dead Ringer for Love
– Paradise
– You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (only the chorus)
– I'd Do Anything for Love
– Bat Out of Hell
I may forget something.

There were also quite a few songs not by Jim. I didn't even recognize some of them. At least Blind as a Bat should have been left out. Roadhouse Blues by the Doors and Why Don't We Do It in the Road worked quite well live (even though Why Don't We Do It in the Road is probably the most stupid Beatles song).

I wish they had done A Kiss Is a Terrible Thing to Waste, I'll Kill You If You Don't Come Back, In the Land of the Pig the Butcher Is King, Seize the Night...
