It doesn't equate. He says he was fired... he was not allowed to contribute further to the show, and was replaced by whoever continued making changes... that's fired. If I was in the middle of the route and they came and told me to go home before I had finished that would mean I was fired or at the least suspended and since they don't suspend writers from Broadway Shows you can say he was fired.
