The thing about Steve is, for me, that he just managed to SOUND like a fucking melancholy vampire while singing the songs well; no mean feat. I think, for most singers (yeah I'm talking about you fucking Michael Crawford), you can either sing well, in the style to which you are accustomed and toward which you naturally lean, or you can sing in character, with an accent, no less, in a foreign tongue, no lesser, and sacrifice a bit of quality (or a truckload; yeah I'm talking about you douching Michael Crawford.) But to do both? Steve Barton did a remarkable, fantastic job. Both in German and English, on the demos, he sings wonderfully AND he embodies the character. Its really quite amazing. I dearly would have loved to hear him work with Jim on some proper studio recordings of Jim's other material. Although, its quite possible that Steve's voice was wholly inappropriate for pop music, and suited strictly for the stage.
