Abronsius is very close to a starring role! Crawford's name above the title with whoever plays the Phantom, playing up the theater vs. rock angle in commercials (which would work because the Professor's music is mainly Gilbert & Sullivan while Krolock is mostly symphonic rock), and giving him the comic role he wants to dissociate from "Phantom" add up to a good opportunity.

As for assuming that Crawford will torpedo everything he's in, he's got a huge ego, but he didn't kill "Phantom". He killed "Vampires" because he insisted on making a role what it wasn't. Give him a role that's basically what he wants, and where's the complaint?
