| This is really a piece about how Tanz failed in the US vs. its tremendous success in Europe. We all know that the failure came from all the changes in the libretto/book--which is primarily Kunze territory not Jim. The music stayed the same with the exception of a few additions. I think it might have sounded strange to mention Jim here because of this. His music was great in both versions and as the article states, it was the show's basic structure which had been changed, not Jim's music. If they were to mention Jim, it should have been in the context of the audience laughing at TEOTH because of the "slapstick" nature of the farce that had been created. This would contrast nicely with the sweeping, emotional rendition of TEOTH in Tanz--and how there is no snickering whatsoever. I enjoyed the article. I don't care anymore whether a true English version ever comes about. The German will always be the most special to me. I just hope for many more years of success! (and a new cast recording would be a great idea!). --BMV | |
