People Who Exploit Famous Artists

I guess that one could argue Steve Steinman is doing what tribute bands do. But I do think that tribute acts should get permission from the act they are exploiting. It's quite possible that there's no law forcing them to do so but perhaps there should be one. Like with The Australian Pink Floyd, who are making a lot of money touring with The Wall. While Rodger Waters' Broadway version has been canned with a loss of more than five million dollars.

I don't know if the The Australian Pink Floyd have permission but I read an old interview with Jim and he said that Steve Steinman has never asked for his blessing or Meat Loaf's blessing.

Jim sold his publishing rights a while ago and it is the purchaser of those rights who gets the money. Although Jim gets the money in the case of a theatrical production, for he held onto those particular rights.

Smeghead may be right that Steve Steinman's show is not more than a concert, it's just that Steve Steinman seems to be close to the line with a forty piece orchestra, pyrothechnics, special effects, hiring stars like Toyah Wilcox and using the Steinman name to sell tickets.

The least he could do is ask Jim for his blessing or publicly acknowledge the debt he owes to both Jim and Meat Loaf. Instead of being highly disrespectful to Meat in the Liverpool Post article that Bellminer posted.

Meat made the songs he exploits famous and he turns around and calls him "wacky". Then he added that Meat is weak.

There are places in Britain where he is starting to outsell Meat Loaf. If I was the big guy, I would be upset too.

Also, should the exploited artist be allowed to stop a tribute concert if the quality of the act is poor. I went to see a Stones tribute band and they were nothing like the Stones. They played Stones music and the singer had big rubber lips, but they were crap.

A lot of people hate Porkington, but is he doing anything more than Steve Steinman? There are people who think Steve Steinman is crap. Why is Porkington hated? At least he has Meat Loaf's blessing, apparently.
