Red Dwarf is an acquired taste. Some moments are incredibly funny while other moments are utter crap. It hit its peak around series 3-6 and then went drastically downhill as one of the cowriters left.
While I'm a fan I certainly wouldn't put it at the same level as Blackadder, Only Fools And Horses or One Foot In The Grave.
