No politician is perfect nor are any saints--our revered Abe Lincoln wasn't made of marble and didn't go around shitting morals as we'd be led to believe in school. He had quite a few less than noble attitudes regarding slavery that tends to get shrouded in popular memory.
Ayers is now a repected professor in Illinois who'd for all practical purposes cleaned up his act. In politics there's a real danger constantly distancing yourself on 'principles'--when your on centre stage, yeah you have to be very careful about appearances. Rev Wright married the Obamas and some of his rhetoric in sermons were what that community responded to and were feeling--culturally, things are pretty different(those tapes on TV were sermons the Obamas weren't present for, by the way). But when the Rev went off the deep end with interviews and 'advising' Obama publically, Obama denounced further relationship with him. His black community in Chicago weren't particularly pleased with that.
Father Flager was confusing but the choice served to diffuse Republican knee-jerk criticism before it started--we have alot of division right now and compromise and working things through different angles are probably the best approachs to the multi-pronged pile of problems.
And yeah, absolutely everybody has their own opinions, ideas, and experiences.
Cheers!
