Probably the most recent example is the Scottish trogladite Susan Boyle who has a face only a mother could love. Had she not gone on Britain Really Doesn't Have Any Talent, then there's not a chance in hell a record company would look twice at her, well they might look twice and think that she's the missing link between Hobbits and Orks, but other than that she wouldn't have a record contract.
