Ronacher invites to the Vampires Dance
One of the biggest musical successes of the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien (united stages Vienna) is going on tour again in autumn, and will be on stage again from September 17th on.
12 years after the world premiere in 1997, a European tour, one through Japan and a (short) visit to the Broadway, Roman Polanski’s creation returns home, with a new look.
“It’s not gonna look the way you might expect” ensures director Cornelius Baltus, “it went through an immense process of evolvement.”

Responsible for the „new look“ are besides Baltus, a long time partner of Polanski, mainly the hungarian artist and musician Kentaur, who joined the team as stage- and costume designer. An original from the world premiere joins the stage with Gernot Kranner, who plays vampire researcher Professor Abronsius. Starring in this version are Thomas Borchert as the sinister Graf von Krolock Marjan Shaki as cute Sarah, who will be seduced by the count, and Lukas Perman as the clumsy Albert (I think they mean Alfred), who fights the blood suckers together with the professor. The twenty piece orchestra of the Verenigte Bühnen will be conducted by musical director Caspar Richter.

“The vampires wont let go of the world” says theatre director Kathrin Zechner. Even though it became “one of the most expensive flops in Broadway history”, as the New York Times called it after it’s quick cancellation. But especially in Germany the musical by Jim Steinman (music) and Michael Kunze (book) remains successful. It toured nearly all the big cities – in Stuttgart even for four years. Besides Estonia and Poland “Tanz der Vampire” will also head for Belgium in October. Cornelius Baltus, who guided the piece through all these stations, joined forces with Roman Polanski for this incarnation. “He gave birth to the baby, we raised it together – and now it’s grown.”

Over the years the piece also gained a message for society, said Michael Kunze, and even proved it with a few lines from the show. “Twelve years ago, there was no financial crisis, we were able to laugh about Graf von Krolock, but even then he knew ‘before the next millennium finally comes, the god most worshiped in this world will be the god of the appetite (greed).’”
