As a figure of speech, its not necessarily a positive thing at all. Its used both ways. Its a bit like, "You made your bed, now lie in it." At face, sounds great. "Hey, I get to lay in this nice, fresh bed I've made."

If your "hard work" is crapping on people, say, the "benefit" may be a gang-beating in a dark alley some night. Seeds sown, and reaped.
