Back in those times I don't think it would have been possible for Jim to write a song like "Objects" or "Lost Boys" (although the opening riff of "Lost Boys" is the same as "Song Of The City Of Hope" from "More Than You Deserve"). I look at Steinman's work in three stages. 1) The Dream Engine - The Confidence Man. Early signs of greater work to come. Some of it's good, some of it's not so good, none of it's "iconic" Steinman. It also sounds very "fast" and upbeat 2) Neverland - Tanz Der Vampire. Over 20 years of the iconic Steinman sound. 3) A New Generation, Garbo / Batman / The Dream Engine. Not Allowed To Love goes back to his theatre routes whereas Still The Children sounds classic Steinman meets a whole new edgy form. Musically and lyrically, I have to say STC is the best Steinman song since "Objects". What Part Of My Body Hurts The Most almost sounds "Bat" era, even resembling "Bat" in some places. Garbo was also pretty different with an exciting new sort of structure of Dark Night Of The Soul and City Of Black And White. Gotham City "Angels Arise" is just pure thrillingness, but it also doesnt sound BAT | |
