It's academic in the sense that the entire discussion is one of theoretical conjecture, yes.

But do you seriously believe that Bat would have been just as popular for just as long in just the same way if Todd had not been involved at all?

Some of the songs would have been really quite similar / identical, but some would have been vastly different. Would the track listing even be the same? It could have been an instant hit then faded away if circumstances were slightly different at the beginning, who knows.

Bat is WAY influenced in every way by the chance pairing of Jim and Todd -- or not so chance if you consider they flogged it endlessly to anyone for a really long time, but you know what I mean. The circumstantial pairing of Jim and Todd.
