I think Jim was on the back-foot before he even met the band. Def Leppard wanted Mutt Lange to produce and no-one else. When Mutt wasn't available they relucantly agreed to someone else and I think their management picked Jim, thinking he was a 'Mutt clone'? Whether Jim became 'relaxed' in his work ethic I don't know, but I imagine he was 'going through the motions' late into the project, waiting to be fired (and in turn the pay-off). If Jim had finished the record I still think Hysteria would have been a great production and sold tons, albeit different from what Mutt Lange did. | |
