"No Matter What" may very well be my least favorite Steinman song. Its almost the opposite of everything that I love about Jim's music. Its trite, cheesy, schmaltsy, maudlin, Disneyfied and Hallmarky in its sentiment. There is no fever to the music, there is no sense of danger or adventure, or of a darker side of Romance. If only Jim had had this song available for Diana Ross when she asked him if he had any songs for her that were more "positive," I expect this would have fit the bill nicely.

I'm not invalidating the song's merits, or dismissing Jim's right to write something in this vein. I'm just saying its not to my own taste.

That said, I adore the "Home By Now" bookends, and Meat's vocals, and the production throughout both HBN and NMW are wonderful, and really make me wonder how good an album would have been if Meat and Jim would have made a follow-up to Bat II before the turn of the century.
