I don't see why there can't be a happy middle ground for this - Have all the songs youn want with a story that is interesting but not weird. Steve Steinman makes a good living with Humour in his productions of Bat content plus I think there is a need to have Andrew Lloyd Webber sensibilities, Jim did well with on Whistle and Meat Loaf's common man touch about it. Trying to make the story too clever or arty does not play out to the attended audience.
