I think the reason the extradition request was turned down was less to do with Polanski being a very good film director and more to do with the US justice system being an absolute shambles, and the whole history of Polanski's case being cock-up after cock-up (no pun intended).
Bravo to the Swiss for refusing to extradite someone to a country where you are guilty until proven innocent, and can be held for several years without charges ever being brought. We wouldn't extradite someone to Burma, North Korea, Sudan or Iran. Why to the USA?
