| I don't think Meat is saying there really WAS a broken fax machine; I think his point is that he was TOLD by Steinman's camp (Sonenberg?) that the producing contract was signed, when it fact it really wasn't, but they blew smoke up his ass by saying it was signed but they couldn't send it because the fax machine was broken. He's not saying the fax machine is the real deal, but that it was bullshit slung by Jimmy's people at the time. Meat IS saying that he believes Sonenberg was very involved in Jim backing out of the project after previously agreeing to do it. I believe he implied that he thought Sonenberg might have been angling for more money for Jim. I don't know; doing a Bat III would have been the surest path to a significant payday for Jim, so it doesn't really make sense that Sonenberg, who stood to get a cut, would try to squash the project. So maybe Jim just didn't really want to do it, but he didn't have the heart to tell Meat himself, so he let Sonenberg be the hatchet man.
