He did a brillaint job with the "Phantom" book for ALW. He works with a packager who makes the books look nice, with lots of glossy but high quality photos. However, his writing is deep and excellent. George Perry is actually a very serious writer. He was the film critic for The Times and most of his books are about film. He recently completed a book with Lauren Bacall about Humphrey Bogart, Warner Brothers hired him to write their official history and he won prizes for his James Dean book. > If it's to be a true historical account of the BOOH > development, then surely he has to speak direct with at > least Meat, Barry Keating & Todd (unless it's just from > Jim's POV)? Oh yes. He must. He spends ages and ages on research and preperation, so even if the show opens in spring 2012, he has to start working on it now. Check out some George Perry books the next time you're in a large bookstore. They look wonderful (although the look is not his department). He works with the same packager everytime. The package is not just about glossy photos. You will see what I mean. Frances sent Jim some of George's books and it didn't take Jim too long to decide that he wanted George to do the "BOOH The Musical" book (which will be much more than the musical - although it won't be a Jim Steinman biography - in parts it will be - but a Jim Steinman biography would be a different thing - Elva is considering ghost writing an autobiography - I hope they don't edit out some of the hillarious stories I've heard). Obvioulsy it was the "Phantom" book that intrigued Jim the most. Ryan has stated on this board that George's Phantom book is the greatest theatre book ever written. And he said this before he knew that George was married to Elva's partner Frances Perry. | |
