Sorry. It is a generalisation. But didn't Meat and Jim get Bat selling in America by touring small places? And then Meat touring small venues in the late eighties led to Bat selling again. I think. I may be wrong. Of course you have to keep touring to keep the following. Meat took some very long breaks during his career. You get to play much bigger venues but you still have to tour. I may be wrong but I think that Freddie suddenly decided to stop touring America and Queen lost the fans they had built up with their long tours of small venues. As far as Meat goes, are you measuring following by concert tickets or by album sales? Even David Bowie doesn't sell many albums these days but he can still sell out arenas (when he's well enough). Of course the UK is different. I think that the two appearances on The Old Grey Whistle Test did more for Bat than touring.
