It's a shame you are going this time of year. Miami is a vibrant (re:expensive) place to go. Miami Beach is fine for sunbathing. There will be shows to see. Usually. But the "Bermuda Triangle tour" suggested is a great one. I have wanted to see Coral Castle for years and never got there. If you are planning future trips to Miami and if you love puzzles, keep an eye out for The Herald Hunt which takes place every year around the first weekend in November. It's a blast!
Otherwise, after you get your certification, there are loads of places to dive and a trip to Key west is something everyone should do at least once. Especially if you don't mind drinking all night.
