I've done that (changing the files) a couple of times when I've been fed up with people - almost always myspace tossers - embedding my photos into their saddo pages. Depending on my mood, I either change it to an image saying "Please don't steal my bandwidth" or something, erm, more likely to promote a rapid response. Much more effective than complaining.

Cost of a .com for one year is £8.99 (about US$17). I'd say that was pretty good value insurance against someone else getting in first with a domain you want.
