Like A Bat Out Of Ellen

The headline of a recent questions and answers page in The Daily Mail was: "Like A Bat Out Of Ellen". They also published a large picture of Ellen from the 1980s. She was very charismatic.

Question: "What became of Ellen Foley, the feisty American singer who duetted with Meat Loaf on Paradise By The Dashboard Light?"

Answer: "The song Paradise By The Dashboard Light was on Meat Loaf's 1977 album Bat Out Of Hell and her performance brought fame to Ellen Foley.

Foley, born in St Louis, Missouri, in June 1951, went on to release three solo albums; Nightout in 1979, The Spirit Of St Louis in 1981 and Another Breath in 1983.

Nightout was produced by Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson, and in 1980 she recorded a duet with Hunter, We Gotta Get Out Of Here, as well as singing background vocals Have A Good Time But Get Out Alive, by Iron City Houserockers.

Mick Jones and Joe Strummer of The Clash contributed several songs to the Spirit Of St Louis album, which features appearances by all four Clash members, and Foley performs on two tracks on the Clash album Sandanista.

The hit Clash single Should I Stay Or Should I Go? was about the relationship between Foley and Jones.

Following Another Breath, Foley sang background vocals on the Joe Jackson album Body And Soul and fronted the band Pandora's Box.

She has appeared on Broadway in Me And My Girl, and Hair, as well as Night Court on TV and in the films Married To The Mob, Cocktail and Fatal Attraction.

She married writer Doug Bernstein in 1990 and since the mid 2000s has been teaching vocal lessons at Paul Green School Of Rock Music in New York."

I would be interested to hear any of the three solo albums that she released in between Bat Out Of Hell and Pandora's Box. Especially the 1981 album the Spirit Of St Louis which features songs and performances by The Clash (one of my favourite bands). I wonder if anyone on the board might have comments about that album.

Of course Jim songs are my absolute favourite songs but I must confess that I also get a strong physical reaction from Clash songs (especially London Calling). Unfortunately I find it difficult to be monogamous when it comes to music and Ellen actually sang on the Sandanista album! Wow. Although, nothing beats having sung with Meat Loaf on Bat Out Of Hell.

I guess Karla De Vito lip synching to Ellen's voice during the now iconic Paradise By The Dashboard Light film clip is one of the most controversial things in rock music history. I know that Ellen turned down the tour but Karla is somehow physically right for performing with Meat. Mixing Ellen's voice with Karla's image produced a perfect result. They did the same thing when Audrey Hepburn did the film version of "My Fair Lady". Boney M had several UK number ones and none of them were actually singing. At least Karla did sing during the tour (and I don't think Meat has found a more suitable partner for Paradise since). I guess they could have used Ellen during the film clip but she just didn't look as right for the part as Karla.
