Scaramouche: Some More Thoughts About What You Were Saying

I asked you: "What song other than "BOOH" could send the audience out on a high for intermission? What would you place at the end of Act One?"

You replied: "I have a great Act 1 ending and will post another 'vision' this week."

I have been looking out for that but may have missed it. Is it your scenario for "All Revved Up"? I don't think it is because that's when Wendy meets The Lost Boys. The more I think about the way you've done that, the more I like it. There are so many big production numbers, making "All Revved Up" a more intimate number might be good. I was thinking that "All Revved Up" would fit into "Grease". Maybe sung by the girls who sing "Sandra Dee".

Ryan had an interesting comment: ""All Revved Up" is also the opening number of the '77 Neverland workshop. It's much slower than what you hear on the album. And they also play it true to the Neverland version on the original Bat tour. I like it. I would really like to see that version recorded. It fits the lyrics more."

You wrote: "If Jim is looking for an 'upbeat' start then I can't think of anything better than having the BOOH intro extended, to act as the overture (the whole audience will recognise the opening chords and riff) and then having a bike exploding from underneath the stage (to emulate the Bat 1 cover), and performing stunts."

I agree absolutely. That is wonderful music. I can just see the darkened arena and then that intro starts and things (like lighting and special effects) start to happen. Then, as you say, the bike explodes from underneath the stage.

I would love to see the Bat 1 cover come to life and hopefully the Bat 2 cover as well.

Can you remember when Jim loved Ryan's idea of blank tombstones waiting for names? Surely there has to be glowing tombstones at the start of the show. Tombstones are so "BOOH". What better music for tombstones than the introduction of "BOOH" the song?

Would you like just the introduction to open the show? Then they could cut from the introduction to "All Revved Up".

Gosh. Its such a magical introduction. Isn't that why Popovitch signed them to Cleveland Records? After he had only listened to that bit. I would love to be Marc Brickman deciding what to do while that is played.

When I say that "All Revved Up" starts the show, I mean that it is the first production number. I am sure that there will be a brief instrumental before that number. I have heard some people (not Jim) suggest that there should be an instrumental medley with bits of all the best songs. I really think that your suggestion is much better. A medley would be too "Sound Of Music"ish, in my opinion.

You wrote: "To add to my previous 'redux' post, as the bike enters from underneath the stage, I can now see 20-30 dancers entering from stage left & right, and from the hole in centre stage, all dressed as realistic bats and creating a choreographed 'swarm' to complement the bike stunts.

If you're looking for spectacle, what else could be better?"

I agree. Jim would love that. I'm sure.

You wrote: "BOOH can still be reprised later, if you want it to end Act 1 or 2."

So would it work if "BOOH" is heard three times in the show?

You wrote: "It can be reprised at the curtain call as a choir piece (as Jim has suggested), but I can't think it would fit anywhere better than the start?"

You also wrote: "JD mentioned that Jim has re-written/added some lyrics to 'All Revved Up' and I always thought most of the Bat songs need lyrical tweaks to work (in the context of a Peter Pan musical)."

I think you are right about this. Some people will wonder what the two "BOOH" albums have to do with "Neverland". Even though Jim has publicly stated on many occassions that he wrote the songs with "Neverland" in mind. Some "lyrical tweaks" might satisfy the sceptics.

You wrote: "Despite reading the Neverland workshop script".

When was the workshop? Was it before Bat 1 was released? I think Jim has been dreaming of this story for decades.

You wrote: "My outlaw being chased by the Police was the first thing that came into my head to justify a bike crash. An alternative could be Peter racing to rescue or meet Wendy on a stormy night and crashing (like the Celine Dion 'All Coming Back' video)."

That actually fits in with Hook being a dictator/police chief instead of a pirate. Also, Peter has to be more of an "outlaw" in this version or it might become just another telling of the Peter Pan story.
