True, non-existence would certainly be different ;)

Although the approach of 'let the public choose' implies that the audience, and this is a Saturday night ITV watching audience, are well informed, educated and in command of their mental faculties. It's the kind of public that the entire democratic process imagines is 'out there'. The X Factor, as it is, is a symptom of a fundamental miscommunication between a vague notion of quality "what the most people vote for MUST be good because most people are voting for it" and people at home whose agenda is not a sincere yearning for quality. Which begs the question; Is Wagner's comedic and 'train-wreck' appeal a certain kind of quality? Is the emotional experience provided a more intense or deeper one than the profound shrug of One Direction, Katie Wastrel or 'the Stubbly one whose name escapes me...'

In TV terms, if the X Factor (assuming its non-nonexistance) were about quality, it'd be on BBC4 and Brian Sewell would be on the panel ;D
