That's true. But if you have a fan exclusive CD that's been sent to your home, then you're probably less likely to share it online than something easily available in the shops, and you feel you're getting something for your paid membership.
Had jimsteinman.com been a paid fansite when the Rhinegold CD's were offered out, then I'd have expected the 'paying' members to have received the exclusive recording automatically. As it turned out some people paid and some people claimed poverty and the CD was given to anyone.
