Actually, Polanski wouldn't necessarily need to be there physically in order to give input. In fact, though Polanski has been there for the casting sessions and (I believe) initial rehearsals in Stuttgart, Hamburg, Warsaw, Berlin, and (now) Budapest, it's actually his associate director Cornelius Baltus who has been handling the day-to-day directorial responsibilities for those productions. By now, I think he would be well-versed in what Polanski is looking for in a "Tanz" production ...
If Polanski needs to be consulted, there is always the option of video teleconferencing, or having a live camera feed to him of casting sessions, rehearsals, etc. so he can have "real-time" input. The fact that Polanski can't physically set foot in the US, or in a country that has an extradition agreement with the US, should NOT be an insurmountable problem, with the marvels of modern technology. Granted, it's not the ideal set-up for a director, but it should be enough for Polanski to play a more-or-less active role in the process.
And I think, given the dismal failure of DOTV, that any subsequent production would be based on the highly successful "Tanz" and not DOTV.
