Thank you. It's been a battle. We've been proud of what we've written for three years now. We've been fighting. 2009 was a tough year. In 2010, we bounced back because we met Rob. That, to me, felt like Todd Rundgren coming on board the original Bat. He just said to us, "Yeah, we can do this." And we went to the meeting and we were going to apply for the grant, the first time this particular amount had been awarded in the history of the region, and we said, "Oh dear God, we're getting onto the rollercoaster. Anything could happen now." And we got the money. But then we kept it to ourselves because we had to wait for the announcement. We kept it down.
Finally, when it was announced, well, it wasn't really announced. There was an advertisement in the back of the theatre's brochure. There was no hooplah surrounding it, which I think is a bit of a two-edged sword (I wouldn't want to hype something to be told that it's utter crap, if you know what I mean. Ugh.)

We took it off over Christmas and we held our first meeting on 17 January. That was the first day I saw the brochure with the advertisement, the first time I'd seen our show mentioned in print, and I said, "I can't wait to come home and tell Kelly."
I just took things for advantage. I got home and fired off about two messages to Kel, and I had no idea. And that night I knew. She'd passed away in her sleep that morning. She was supposed to be part of this, sitting in on rehearsals and guiding me throughout the process. She was supposed to be there opening night, kicking her feet up after all of the stress and enjoying the celebrations. And to think I was anxious when she said she was flying to New Zealand for a couple weeks.

Now I'll never see her again.

I almost walked away but some very good friends of mine helped me to see the light. And I continued.

We got our director. We got the story in the paper. We're still forming the rest of our team, and we know it's an enormous challenge to get interest in something new, especially when new works of musical theatre aren't often produced in our city. Apparently we're the youngest writers in the region to have produced a new musical, and I hope that helps us. And I hope that in the end it will have been noticed by at least a hundred people who will never forget it as long as they're alive, the way I will never forget Bat 2 etc.
