I think there was a brief period when the singer was allowed to sing live but the band had to pretend to play to the studio recording.

There was some controversy with Rod Stewart slipping in an f word that the producers didn't notice and it was broadcast.

Syd Barrett was meant to lyp synch to Arnold Lane on an American show that went out live and he just stood there with his mouth closed.
