I like Elton John, and when I read the Philip Norman bio, he described Elton's voice as taking all the sexual edge off Taupin's racier lyrics. If I'm remembering correctly, Norman said his voice is "not so much effeminate as neuter". I think that's a pretty good description of Elton's (early) voice, and this might be how you see Rory's voice.

I dunno, I like Rory's vocals, nice, clear-as-a-bell, and I have no trouble thinking he's singing to a girl.

What do you think of Darren Holden's Surf's Up? If it had better production, that would match or surpass the BfG version for me.
