'Graduate' and 'Godspell'

Hope springs eternal, and why not? Two more musicals, both with famous names, are in the offing. One, brand new, is planned for Broadway by year's end. The other, an updated revival, is scheduled for Off Broadway, probably by early summer.

The Broadway entry will be ''The Graduate,'' budgeted at $3 million and now being worked on by Martin Charnin and Jim Steinman. Mr. Charnin will direct and is co-writing the book and lyrics with Mr. Steinman, who is also writing the music (he's the composer responsible for such songs as ''Total Eclipse of the Heart'' and ''Making Love Out of Nothing at All'').

''It's a truly contemporary score, bridging the gap between rock and theater music,'' said Mr. Charnin, emphasizing that ''this will be heavily musical and not the movie.''

''Timeless - you won't know what year it's set in,'' said Gladys Nederlander, who as Gladys Rackmil co-produced a number of shows in the last decade. She's doing this one with her husband, Robert Nederlander, and with John Wilner and Peter Le Donne.
