The society is the first amateur group to stage the tale since the rights to the show were released.

It tells the story of a group of children who think they have found Jesus hiding in a barn and was made famous by the 1961 film, starring Hayley Mills.
Chairman of North Staffs Operatic Society Brian Rawlins said he had been in negotiations with Andrew Lloyd Webber's company, The Really Useful Group, for nearly a year before permission was granted.

He says: "They have now released it for all amateur societies, but our production will be the first in the UK.

"It is a magical show, with some wonderful songs, including Whistle Down The Wind, When Children Rule The World and No Matter What They Tell Me."
Stoke-on-Trent-based actor Gareth Ridge is taking the lead role of The Man.

Gareth, aged 26, recently took part in the ITV talent contest to look for the next leading man to take to the stage as Jesus Christ Superstar.
He was in the last 100 entrants although he failed to make it to the live finals.

Brian continues: "He first appeared with North Staffs Operatic Society as the soloist in their production of Cabaret last year."
The role of Swallow, who finds the man she thinks is Jesus, will be performed by 18-year-old Lydia Hall, of Meir Park.
Lydia first joined the group aged 10, when she appeared in Annie.

Samuel Horton, aged nine, of Madeley Heath, and 12-year-old Emilia Braddon, of Leek, will appear as Swallow's brother and sister.

Whistle Down The Wind is at the Mitchell Arts Centre from Tuesday, October 16 until Saturday, October 20 at 7.30pm. There is a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. For tickets call 01782 393333.
